Cricket
in Education Centre
Lancashire
County Cricket Club and Trafford MBC (School Improvement Service)
worked in partnership on a bid to the New Opportunities Fund
for Out of Hours Learning.
This refers to activities that take place out of normal
school hours. Funding was gained for three years to support
this initiative. The
schools involved in this are:
Highfield
Primary School
St.
Hugh of Lincoln R.C. Primary School
Cherry
Manor Primary School
Gorse
Hill Primary School
Manor
High School
A
Centre has now been set up at Lancashire County Cricket Club
with a Cricket Centre Manager, Glyn McGuire. Initially the Centre will be opening two nights
a week. It is hoped
to extend this.
Linked
to this initiative is another successful bid between the Club
and Trafford MBC (School Improvement Service). This was “Partners
in Study Support” which aims to better prepare the pupils for
their study support activity – through the use of interactive
cricket games beforehand. Lancashire
County Cricket Club roadshow runs these activities with the
Study Support Centre Manager in the school prior to their study
support sessions.
The
main aim of the study support programme is to develop young
people’s teamworking skills and raise standards of Literacy,
Numeracy and ICT. Activities
will focus on cricket as a learning tool to do this. The programme will also include some practical skills.
The
Government views study support as a main strand in its current
focus of raising standards and social inclusion.
